Chengdu, but no Pandas

Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center-2

Just before spring of this year, I traveled from Beijing to Chengdu, a beautiful city in Sichuan province, not to see the pandas that Chengdu is so famous for, but to visit some companies.  I had not been in Chengdu at this time of year before and coming from a still much cooler Beijing, I was surprised how green everything already was.  Chengdu with a population of 14 million, or thereabouts, is one of China’s fasted growing (particularly in importance) cities.

It is almost a given with business travel, perhaps sadly, that attractions like pandas are left to wait for another day, while attending to the business at hand.  A steady diet of financial districts, conference rooms and sometimes spectacular city views is the norm.  Likely, or better, hopefully, a traveler returns soon to see the city in yet a different light.

I know you are dying to ask whether, after many years of working with companies in many places, it is possible to distinctly remember each of them.  I am here to tell you that the hard work of the entrepreneurs leaves a deep impression in the mind of this visitor.  Each company is a tribute to its founders’ desire to forge success where before there was not a thing, even if their creations are sometimes now large and professionally managed businesses.
